Luke 9:59-62
“He said to another man, Follow me. But he replied, Lord, first let me go and bury my father. Jesus said to him, Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God. Still another said, I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family. Jesus replied, No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”
Luke 14:26-27
“If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple. And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.”
Reflection
The words of Jesus often deeply confront our soul because He was not calling superficial believers, but complete disciples. When Jesus spoke about leaving father, mother, children, or possessions, He was not promoting insensitivity or lack of love. He was revealing an eternal truth: nothing can take the place of absolute obedience to God.
The Kingdom demands total priority. Jesus understood that any human, emotional, or earthly attachment placed above the divine call would eventually become an obstacle to fulfilling eternal purpose. That is why His words were so radical. He was looking for people capable of responding like Moses: “I leave everything for what God has placed before me.”
Crowds followed Jesus because of miracles, provision, or temporary emotion, but few were willing to walk the path of true discipleship. A disciple does not simply hear Christ’s words; a disciple lives as He lived, obeys as He obeyed, and fully surrenders their will to the Father.
Following Christ carries a real cost. It requires everything else to take second place before His voice. Yet what seems like loss in the natural becomes eternal life, purpose, and true fulfillment in the Kingdom. God is not seeking admirers; He is seeking disciples willing to leave everything behind to follow Him completely.
Meditation for Today
Is there anything or anyone occupying a higher place than obedience to Christ in my life?
Am I following Jesus only for blessing, or as a true disciple?
What things do I need to fully surrender in order to walk in fullness with Him?
Prayer
Father, search my heart and reveal any attachment that is taking the place that belongs only to You. Give me a spirit willing to obey You completely, even when the cost feels high or difficult for my natural mind to understand.
Teach me to walk as a true disciple and not merely as someone following from a distance. Let my love for You be greater than anything else, and give me the courage to answer Your call with complete surrender. Form within me the character and obedience of Christ. Amen.
