1 John 4:18
“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.”
Ephesians 3:17-19
“That ye, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend… and to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.”
Ephesians 2:6
“And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.”
Reflection
Fear and love cannot coexist in their purest form; one drives out the other. John states it plainly: perfect love casts out fear. This doesn’t mean fear disappears by sheer willpower, but that there is a direct relationship between how deeply a person knows and experiences God’s love and the space fear can continue occupying in their mind. Where the Father’s love is deeply established, fear loses its ground.
Paul prays for exactly this in Ephesians: that believers be rooted and grounded in love, not as a distant theological concept, but as an experienced reality, able to comprehend the width, length, depth, and height of the love of Christ. This prayer recognizes that knowing about God’s love and being flooded by that love are different experiences; it’s the latter that produces true inner transformation, able to displace fear structures formed over years, even from traumatic experiences.
This process of being freed from fear and established in the Father’s love is intimately connected to the spiritual position Christ already gave us: seated with Him in the heavenly places. It’s not about ascending through personal effort or reaching an advanced spiritual state after years of discipline; it’s a position already granted by grace to everyone in Christ. From that heavenly position, the fear that once governed the mind loses its foundation, because whoever is seated in the heavenly places sees reality from a completely different perspective than someone still trapped in structures of earthly fear.
The transformation of these mental structures—thought patterns formed by experiences of harm, fear, and intimidation—doesn’t happen automatically or instantly for everyone, but it does begin with this foundational truth: the Father’s love is greater than any fear, and the heavenly position Christ gave us is the place from which those structures can finally be replaced by a renewed, secure, and free mind.
Meditation for today
What fear structures do I recognize in my own mind that need to be replaced by the Father’s love?
Am I living aware of my already-established position in the heavenly places, or am I still operating from an earthly mindset of fear?
How can I allow God’s love today—not just as a concept but as a real experience—to cast out the fear that still remains in me?
Prayer
Father, thank You that in Your perfect love there is no room for fear. Help me to know, not only with my mind but in real experience, the width and depth of Your love, so that this love casts out every fear still dwelling in me.
Thank You that You have already seated me with Christ in the heavenly places. From that position, break every structure of fear formed in my mind by past experiences of pain or intimidation. Fill me with Your love in such a way that there is no longer room for fear, and that I may live established, secure, and free in You. In the name of Jesus, amen.
Blessings beloved
